Programming Offerings

Scratch Programming 1

Suitable for students in grade 5 and up with little or no programming experience.

Many parents say they would feel better about their children’s computer time if it wScratch Classere spent programming instead of playing video games. But how to arrange it?
This course will introduce your son or daughter to the world of  computer programming. Scratch is a visually and syntactically friendly language designed to familiarize beginners with typical programming constructions. Lots of colorful fun!

Taught by Garry Channing, Director TOH.  Nine one-hour meetings, $180, maximum 8 students per class.

Scratch Programming 2

Suitable for students in grade 5 and up with little or no programming experience.

A continuation of Scratch Programming 1.

Taught by Garry Channing, Director TOH. Nine one-hour meetings, $180, maximum 8 students per class.

Java Programming 1

Suitable for grades 6 and up with some programming experience

Think algorithms! Following Udacity’s Intro to Programming in Java, students in this course develop the knack for thinking like a programmer (algorithmically)–and a comfort with using online resources to further their study. During class hours, we watch short segments of the Udacity course. The instructor then elaborates on the concepts introduced, and we get to work: The majority of class time is spent working together through programming problems. Java is one of the world’s most widely used computer languages and is the language employed in AP Computer Science.

Taught by Garry Channing, Director TOH.  Ten 2-hour meetings, $300, maximum 8 students per class.

Java Programming 2

Suitable for grades 6 and up with some programming experience

A continuation of Java Programming 1.

Taught by Garry Channing, Director TOH.  Ten 2-hour meetings, $300, maximum 8 students per class.

Computer Science League

Suitable for grades 5 and up

Put your programming in perspective by learning how information is actually stored and manipulated by your CPU. It’s old school, but it’s still the base of the tower of layers of productivity enhancers that make up the modern programming environment. We prepare for and participate in the American Computer Science League, a multi-month computer science challenge that has been running for over 30 years.

Taught by Garry Channing, Director TOH. Ten one-hour meetings, $150.
